Colin Grant Viar 

1957-2016

Sheriff Ronald L. Gillispie and the members of the Lynchburg Sheriff's Office are saddened to report that 28 year veteran, Lt. Colin Grant Viar died Tuesday, March 29, 2016 after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by his devoted wife Mary Shattuck Viar. Lt. Viar joined the Lynchburg Sheriff's Office on August 01, 1987 and was loyal employee and friend. Lt. Viar's professionalism and knowledge as well as his infectious warmth and humor will be greatly missed.

     
Bill Shumate

The Lynchburg Sheriff's Office mournfully retires badge 1219 in loving memory and honor of Senior Deputy Bill Shumate. Sr. Deputy Shumate joined the Lynchburg Sheriff's Office in 2005 and brought with him dedication and loyalty to both the Sheriff and the community. Bill also served his community by volunteering at the Concord Rescue Squad and the Fire Department.

Bill was born June 20, 1951 in Washington D.C. During the Vietnam War, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, serving in the 101st. Airborne Division as an elite sniper. Bill was an avid Civil War re-enactor and was a member of the 11th. Virginia Infantry Regt. acting as the unit surgeon. He was an active member of Calvary Chapel, Lynchburg. Bill was the loving husband of Rebecca "Becky" Shumate for more than 33 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by eight children and ten grandchildren.
