Juvenile Fire Setter Program (YFIRE)
Children have a natural curiosity about things in life. One of those things is fire and how it works. Sometimes children just want to "act grown up" and either try lighting leaves, firewood, or even a cigarette. Not understanding the complete dangers of playing with fire, they may experiment and therefore get into trouble, whether at home or in public.
Adults must instill in children that matches and lighters are tools, not toys. The Lynchburg Fire Marshal's Office offers a YFIRE (Youth Firesetter Intervention Research & Education) program concerning Juvenile Firesetting. In this program, we discuss with the child the dangers and injuries, legal issues, and why they want to light fires.
The YFire Program offers children the opportunity to learn about the dangers of fire and its consequences. If you would like to refer a child or have questions regarding this program, please feel free to call us at (434) 455-6342 or (434) 455-6375 or email jennifer.mayberry@lynchburgva.gov.
