Child Safety Seat Program

The department currently has Child Safety Seat Technicians who have taken the National Standardized Child Passenger Safety Training Program and they are certified by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) to install child restraint devices.

Remember, it's the law to have every child under the age of eight (8) restrained in an appropriate Child Safety Seat.

Assistance Available

• 
  Provide guidance as to which type of child seat is appropriate for your child's size and age
• 
  Make sure your child seat is safe to use with no product recalls
• 
  Install and educate you how to install the appropriate child safety seat for your child
• 
  Provide information about the use of after-market products
• 
  Answer other questions about your child's safety

• 
  Over 90% of Americans do not have their children restrained correctly.
• 
  Most people stop using booster seats for children too soon.
• 
  A child must be 1 year old AND weigh 20 pounds before the car seat can safely be placed in a forward position.
• 
  If your car seat does not meet standards, you may be eligible for a free car seat through our Low-Income Child Seat Program.

Low-Income Child Seat Program Eligibility

• 
  Medicaid, WIC, FAMIS eligible or meet program income eligibility guidelines
• 
  Residents of VirginiaParent, legal guardian, or foster care parent of the child
• 
  At earliest, in the last trimester of pregnancy
• 
  Applying for child seven years or younger and provided child is within the program's safety seat manufacturer guidelines
• 
  Available to attend a safety seat installation and use class
• 
  Sign a waiver of liability release form
