Be a Friendly Flusher
Our sewer system is designed to carry wastewater away from your home to the Lynchburg Regional Water Resource Recovery Facility, where it can be safely and effectively cleaned through biological and chemical treatment processes. However, if something enters our sewer pipes that shouldn’t be there, it can clog our pipes and cause sewer overflows. Overflows are costly to fix and detrimental to our environment. You can help protect our environment and keep our water clean by making sure you are flushing only pipe-friendly items (pee, poo, and toilet paper)!
Specific items that should never go down the drain are...
"Flushable" wipes, cleaning wipes, cleaning cloths, and paper towelsThese items should never be flushed or sent down the drain. Instead of breaking down, these wipes stretch, get caught on the sides of pipes, and cause clogged pipes. Always place wipes in the trash after use, never down the drain!
Fats, Oils, and Grease
These ingredients should never enter sewer pipes. Although they may be in liquid form when you pour it out, these ingredients harden in the cool pipes and cause huge clogs and sewer backups. Pour used cooking oil into a container then place in the trash, or put a lid on it and bring it back to us at the Lynchburg Regional Water Resource Recovery Facility to be recycled into a biofuel! For more information, visit our Enjoy the Feast, Recycle the Grease page.
Medications and PrescriptionsMedications contain chemicals that cannot be removed during the treatment process. If you flush medicine down the drain, trace amounts of these chemicals can end up in our waterways. Dispose of unwanted or unused medications on prescription take back days.
