Selected from over 300,000 eligible candidates, the City of Lynchburg received the award for its innovative application of technology, data collection, geospatial information visualization, and thought leadership through GIS in the field of Local Government. May 2017 — Esri, a world leader in geographic information system (GIS) technology, recognized the City of Lynchburg as having a Noteworthy Open Data Portal. The City of Lynchburg was featured in the Noteworthy Data section of Esri's Open Data website. The featured Crime dataset is provided by the Lynchburg Police Department and records offenses back to 2000. October 2016 — Congratulations to the GIS Division of the City of Lynchburg for their 2nd Place win for their online mapping application, My City Services, at the Virginia Association for Mapping and Land Information Systems Conference held on October 20th held on the campus of the University of Virginia. The division also received a 3rd Place win for the City's Open Data Portal. Both of these web applications serve the community by publishing up-to-date information in an open and transparent way.
