“The public Parks are the lungs that fill a city.  Lynchburg possesses eighty-eight acres of public parks that recreate her toil-worn citizens, and vitalize them with the pure and balmy breath of nature's reservoir of health." The News, 1900

First to Know

Those words are as true today as when they were written in 1900 and appeared in a special commemorative edition of The News. One cannot think of Lynchburg’s parks devoid of people and their recreation; children playing, neighbors walking, ball games, playgrounds and family picnics.   Today, Lynchburg’s public parks encompass over 800 acres of land, from the small and charming Biggers Park to the amazing natural riches of the Blackwater Creek Natural Area.   The passive beauty of Lynchburg’s parks is buoyed by the passionate devotion to active recreation that has energized our community from the very earliest days.  Baseball, football, tennis, swimming and volleyball; horseshoes, bicycle parades and harmonica clubs; marbles tournaments and kite days; Lynchburg has always had a lively, spirited appreciation of recreation.

Today our community members continue to enjoy recreational programs in arts, athletics, wellness and natural heritage programs.  We serve senior adults, children, and those with special needs throughout our community. Recreation programs challenge our minds and bodies, express our creativity and form new bonds between our participants; bonds of friendship, laughter and memories.

We hope you will join us in exploring new opportunities as we work to serve our community and work to fulfill our mission…

The Lynchburg Parks and Recreation Department contributes to a healthy, active, educated and spirited community by providing stewardship and management of parklands, trails and civic facilities and creating opportunities for youth, adults and senior adults to participate in a rich variety of recreational activities.
