WINTER WEATHER UPDATE DEC. 8, 4PM:
The City of Lynchburg is anticipating snowfall to continue this evening and continue until early afternoon on Saturday, December 9. Snow accumulation on city streets is expected to be between four and eight inches.
The Public Works Department is prepared to respond this event and will have crews working overnight and into Saturday with spreader and plow operations conducted as needed. City residents should be aware that primary and secondary roads will be the priority, and residential streets will only be addressed after primary and secondary roads are cleared. Additionally, residential streets will only be plowed if more than two inches of snow accumulate on area roadways.
Based on the low temperatures predicted after the storm, there is an expectation that snow will freeze to the pavement in some locations and will remain on streets even after plowing and salt applications have been applied. Residents are encouraged to avoid travel if at all possible; however, if travel does become necessary, please use extreme caution.
Beginning this afternoon, Friday, December 8, the City of Lynchburg is expected to receive periods of rain which will mix with snow at times, then change to mainly snow tonight. There is a 30% chance of a slushy coating on some paved surfaces through the afternoon, especially on bridges and overpasses. Most of the snow accumulation will occur tonight into tomorrow morning. Snow is expected to taper off in the early afternoon on Saturday; however, wet and slushy roads can freeze Saturday night.
The City of Lynchburg’s Public Works Department is making preparations for inclement weather and will have crews working overnight and into Saturday with spreader and plow operations conducted as needed.
Priorities for clearing streets are:
- Priority 1: Clearing of all primary streets and heaviest traffic routes
- Priority 2: Clearing of all collector streets and bus routes
- Priority 3: Plowing of all residential streets if more than two inches of snow exists
Because of the weather forecast, the Convenience Center located on Concord Turnpike will be closed on Saturday, December 9 and will reopen on Tuesday, December 12. Leaf collection has been suspended until next week.
