Lynchburg City Manager Bonnie Svrcek announced today that she has chosen Deputy Airport Director Andrew LaGala to succeed Mark Courtney as Director of the Lynchburg Regional Airport. On Friday, August 2, Courtney announced his plans to retire effective November 1, 2019.
“I am very happy that we had a plan in place to succeed retiring Airport Director Mark Courtney,” said Svrcek. “Mr. LaGala brings a wealth of airport management experience with him to this position and has been training under Mark Courtney since his arrival last November. As I have said previously, I expect the transition in leadership to be seamless.”
In his position as Deputy Airport Director and Chief Operating Officer, LaGala has worked closely with Courtney on the Airport’s five-year, $20M Federal, State and City Airport Capital Improvement Plan and with the $3.2M budget. LaGala is also directly responsible for airport operations, maintenance, custodial, FAR Part 139 certification and TSA Part 1542 security functions.
LaGala holds the Accredited Airport Executive (A.A.E.) designation from the American Association of Airport Executives, the world's largest professional organization for airport executives. Prior to coming to Lynchburg, LaGala had an extensive career in the airport industry including holding several positions with the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority in Tampa, Florida. He last served as the Authority’s Manager of Commercial Real Estate/Airline Affairs – Tampa International Airport and was responsible for working closely with the legal staff to establish new airlines, preparing new airline and commercial agreements and worked closely with three airport Fixed Based Operators (FBO) to ensure agreement compliance. LaGala has also worked for airports in Birmingham, Alabama; Broward County, Florida; and Hollywood, Florida.
“I have been excited to be part of this team over the past year and under the leadership of Mr. Courtney,” said LaGala. “I am honored to have the privilege to lead such a dedicated team here at the airport that does a remarkable job. I also look forward to working with the community and business leaders in continuing to grow the airport in the years to come.”
LaGala will assume his new duties as Airport Director on November 1, 2019.
