City Manager Appoints Acting Fire Chief

With the retirement of Fire Chief Brad Ferguson effective January 1, 2018 following 41 years of service to the citizens of Lynchburg and 12 years as Fire Chief, City Manager Bonnie Svrcek has announced the appointment of Greg Wormser, Deputy Chief of Operations to the position of Acting Fire Chief.  Deputy Chief Wormser has worked in the Lynchburg Fire Department since 1995 when he joined as a Firefighter Paramedic. He served as a Captain, Fire Marshal and Battalion Chief prior to his appointment in 2015 as Deputy Fire Chief of Operations.

Svrcek noted that Deputy Chief Wormser brings a depth of knowledge to serve in this position while the search for a new Fire Chief continues.  Deputy Chief Wormser said, “I am honored and humbled by the confidence the City Manager has of me to fill the gap while the search continues for the new Chief. I look forward to providing the leadership to the Lynchburg Fire Department during this time.”  Wormser will continue his responsibilities as Deputy Chief of Operations while filling the Acting Fire Chief position.

The search for the new Fire Chief continues according to Svrcek.  Initial interviews continue from a pool of 30 qualified candidates.  From the initial interviews, a smaller pool of candidates will be invited to return to the city for a broader and more intensive assessment in January.
