The American Big Winner No. 31 grader built around 1880 by American Road Machinery Company in Kennett Square, PA. An antique road grader is now on display at Public Works on Memorial Avenue.
Originally designed to be pulled by a team of four or more horses, the American Big Winner No. 31 grader was converted in later years so that a farm tractor could pull it. The American Road Machinery Company in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, manufactured the grader around 1880. Two former Streets’ employees, Frank Robinson and Chuck Jenkins, refurbished the grader with the help of generous contributions from local companies. Lynchburg Ready Mix Company furnished the concrete for the pad site; Counts and Dobyns Excavating Incorporated furnished the labor for the pad; and Dominion Metallurgical Incorporated furnished a cast part for the grader.
