Those who paid the ultimate sacrifice...
On May 30, 1883, at 10:00 a.m., the Lynchburg Fire Department received a call for a fire at 1003 Main Street, a fire that would claim the lives of Lynchburg firefighters. Although these men were not employees of the department, they were volunteers that had served the citizens of Lynchburg in the days of the volunteer departments and to this day are remembered as the first firefighters killed in the line of duty with the Lynchburg Fire Department.
Throughout the years the department would suffer many more line-of-duty losses and all of these men are held in great esteem for making the supreme sacrifice on behalf of the citizens of Lynchburg.
