2100 Park Avenue, Lynchburg, VA 24501

37 acres

In 1862 Samuel Miller donated 18 acres of land to the City of Lynchburg to be held “…in trust as, and for a public Promenade and Pleasure Ground for the use of the citizens of Lynchburg, and Strangers, and visitors temporarily sojourning there.”

Those original 18 acres became City Park, the first public park in Lynchburg.  Renamed Miller Park in honor of Samuel Miller, the park has changed in many ways throughout its long history.

Some important features of the park remain.  Mr. Miller wished the City to “…leave standing as many of the Native trees as may be practicable…,” and today, Miller Park remains graced by lovely, tall trees.  Picnic shelters and the swimming pool have always been an important part of the park; today these facilities continue to be popular with visitors.  Memorials to important dates, people and events are found throughout the park and help create a sense of the history of the park and of Lynchburg.

Miller Park has two picnic shelters that can be rented, as well as the Aviary.  The pool can also be rented on special occasions.  To find out about how to rent these and other facilities throughout the parks, email Customer Service or call (434) 455-5858.

Along with College, Perrymont and Younger Parks, Miller Park has undergone master planning in the fall of 2004.  Master planning is a way to evaluate each park both separately and as a part of the City's park system.  The process enables community members and stakeholders in the park to work with City staff to identify important issues about the future of the park. During the process many discussions took place, all focused on understanding the role of Miller Park in Lynchburg's past, present and future.

Community members are an essential part of the process of master planning.  We value your ideas and welcome your participation.  Be sure to check our website for announcements of public meetings or call our main office at (434) 455-5858 to find out how you can get involved.
