Education

Lynchburg has a long tradition of excellence in education. There are two award-winning public high schools, one regional Catholic school, an Episcopal boarding prep school, three other Christian schools, one private elementary school, several pre-schools and a school designed for children with learning disabilities. In addition, there are 11 public elementary schools and three public middle schools. (The picture at the left is of T.C. Miller Elementary School for Innovation.)

Beyond that, Lynchburg is host to six colleges; Lynchburg College, Liberty University, Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, Central Virginia Community College, Christ College, and the oldest institution of higher learning in Lynchburg, Virginia University in Lynchburg. Meanwhile, Sweet Briar College is tucked into the Amherst County foothills less than 20 miles away.

But the community has always cherished its secondary schools above all. E.C. Glass was named one of America’s top high schools by Redbook Magazine in 2000, and crosstown Heritage had its own moment of glory when its Junior ROTC program was proclaimed the nation’s best.
