Special Events

2007 Tour of Virginia

Lynchburg is a great place to enjoy many diverse cultural and civic events. Each year dozens of large-scale events are conducted on City streets, public property, parks and public facilities. Festivals, fairs and other events are held throughout the year by many different organizations; there is something for everyone nearly every week of the year!

In order to provide high quality services to those who hold special events and to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for both participants and spectators, the City of Lynchburg grants permits for special events. The City's Special Event Permit process is intended to provide citizens and event organizers a single point of contact to make coordinating City services as simple as possible. Please read the City of Lynchburg's Special Event Policy for complete information.  If you aren't sure where you want to hold your event, complete information can be found on our Recreation Facilities page.

There are three steps which must be followed to receive your City permit:

Step 1
To determine which permit your event needs, you must first read and complete our Facility, Park Use and Special Event Questionnaire

Step 2
After completion of the questionnaire, fill our the Special Event Permit application completely, including signature.

Step 3
Mail a hard copy of your completed application, with attached questionnaire and any applicable fees to Parks and Recreation, at 301 Grove Street.  To deliver your application in person, contact Sharon Brown at (434) 455-5871.

If you require a Special Event Permit, you must also submit a copy of your application on a CD or by email.  Please see the Special Event Permit application for details.

City-Sanctioned Special Event Grant Program

The City of Lynchburg has created the City-Sanctioned Special Event Grant Program to help non-profit organizations create and build successful special events. In addition to financial support to help cover the cost of City services at their event, grantees will receive planning, marketing and coordination assistance as well as help in evaluating the success of their event.

The maximum amount granted to each grantee is $3,000.00 per cycle. Only one application per applicant during each cycle is allowed. Grant applications are accepted in two grant cycles each fiscal year, by November 15 and April 15 of each year.

If you think your organization may be eligible to receive a City-Sanctioned Special Event Grant, please review the grant program guidelines and application, links provided below, or call Sharon Brown at (434) 455-5871.
