1. Online Payments

Real estate tax, personal property tax, business property tax and Utility (Water) Bills may be paid via the internet. This service is available 24 hours a day, and 7 days a week through Virginia Information Providers Network (VIPNET). Debit Card, Visa and Master Card are accepted for online payments.

VIPNET will charge a fee of 2% + $1.00 for each payment charged.

2. Telephone Payments

Real estate tax, personal property tax and business property tax may also be made by phone. This service is available 24 hours a day, and 7 days a week. Visa/Master Card, AMEX and Discover are accepted for telephone payments.

Instructions for Telephone Payments

Call 1-800-272-9829 (1-800-2PAY-TAX) You will be prompted to enter the following information on your touch tone phone keypad:

The system will give you a verbal receipt number. There is a convenience fee for using this service.

  1. Enter Jurisdiction code 1027
  2. Press 1 to pay Personal Property Tax
  3. Press 2 to pay Real Estate Tax
  4. Enter Tax Account Number or Map Number
  5. Enter a 10 digit daytime phone number where you can be reached
  6. Enter credit card number
  7. Enter 2 digit expiration month
  8. Enter 4 digit expiration year

  • Discover only: You can also pay using Discover by calling Billings and Collections directly at 434-455-3850, or pay in person at City Hall, 900 Church Street.. You will be charged a service fee not to exceed $48.00.

  • By mail: Mail checks to The City of Lynchburg, P.O. Box 603, Lynchburg, VA 24505. Postmark must be by the due date to avoid late charges.
  • In person: Visit our main tax office at 900 Church Street.
    Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
 

4. A note about credit cards

In order to comply with the tax code, most credit card company by-laws require local collection offices to use a third party to process credit card payments for VISA and Master Card. The City of Lynchburg Billings and Collections office uses Virginia Information Providers Network (VIPNET) to process credit card payments over the internet and Official Payments Corporation to process automated telephone credit card payments. VIPNET will charge a convenience fee of 2% plus $1.00 for each payment charged. Official Payments corporations fees for paying by phone are listed under fee schedule. These fees are allowed by State law.
