RUNWAY EXTENSION OPENS TO AIR TRAFFIC
The new extension to the runway at Lynchburg Regional Airport became operational on August 12, 2007. The extension added an additional 1,301 feet to the existing runway, making the total length 7,100 feet. The extension project is the culmination of many years of logistical and financial planning. This five-phase project began in September 2003 with an environmental assessment and has also involved land acquisition, engineering/design, and finally, construction. The total project cost of approximately $14.9 million has been funded entirely with a combination of federal entitlement and discretionary funds, state entitlement funds, and Passenger Facility Charge (PFC) funds.
