The Community Dialogue on Race and Racism will sponsor a series of Racial Equity Education events in November and December. The events include showings and group discussions around the three-part documentary, Race – the Power of an Illusion, beginning Monday, November 9 in the Leggett Building at Randolph College. In addition to this showing, the YWCA (626 Church Street), Lynchburg College, and Liberty University will also hold showings of the documentary. All viewings are open to the public and free of charge. For a complete listing, visit www.manyvoicesonecommunity.com.
On December 3 at 7:00 p.m., a Racial Equity Symposium entitled “Its Real! Racism, Discrimination, and the Sweet Enchantment of Color-Blindness in Contemporary America” will be held at Randolph College at Smith Hall. The guest speaker will be Dr. Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, Professor of Sociology at the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at Duke University.
Professor Bonilla-Silva lectures on racial and ethnic matters all over the U.S. and increasingly internationally. His most recent presentations have been on the connections between the discourses of citizenship, democracy, and human rights; the Latin Americanization of racial stratification in the United States, and on the meaning and significance of the political ascendancy of Barack Obama. This year he will also lecture on his work on racial grammar as well as on the diversity challenge for HWCU’s (historically white colleges and universities).
